Biography:
John Hwang was born into a Christian family in Seoul, South Korea on January 11, 1972. Early in his childhood, John placed his faith in Jesus as his Savior. Growing up, he always sensed a Divine purpose for His life. At the age of thirteen, God revealed to him His plan to use him to teach God’s Word to others. Doors began to open; John began to teach…and he continues to teach today. He has served as an assisting pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, California, Calvary Chapel San Diego, California, and Calvary Chapel Corvallis, Oregon. John also spent two years serving as the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Monmouth, Oregon.
In the summer of 2002, John exchanged his life in America for a new life in Brazil. God had called John to establish a Calvary Chapel fellowship in Curitiba. During that time God brought Flávia Cruzes into his life. On June 12, 2004, John and Flávia were married, thus beginning a new season in their lives as husband and wife. After leaving Curitiba for a season to establish a Bible College in Campo Morauo, John and Flávia have returned to the city they love to establish Calvary Chapel International Fellowship.
The city:
Curitiba is the capital of the state of Paraná and one of the most influential cities in Brazil. The citizens of Curitiba are predominantly of European descent and that influence is evident in it’s culture and architecture. The population is over 2 million. The weather is generally moderate with mild winters and comfortable summers, but can be unpredictable. A local saying says that “Curitiba is a city in which the four seasons are clearly defined, and it has all four every day.”
The country:
Brazil, the 5th largest country, is a “melting pot” of nations. 53% European (Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and German), 34% Mixed race (Mestizo and Mulatto), 11% African, and 1% Asian. A nation of tremendous natural resources and significance in the world economically and culturally. However, the people of Brazil themselves are without question the most valuable resource this nation holds. Brazil is rapidly becoming one of the world’s leading missionary sending nations.
