The country:
South Africa, on the continent’s southern tip, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by the Indian Ocean on the south and east. South Africa has a population of nearly 45 million people of which the majority are black. Until the early 1990’s the country had been ruled by the minority white population and suffered under the affects of apartheid. Beginning in the early 1990’s Nelson Mandela and F. W. de Klerk began the end of apartheid.
Today one of the most outstanding and shocking facts about South Africa is the percentage of the population infected with AIDS. Nearly 30% of the total population is infected with the AIDS virus.
Short biography:
Ashley graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Health Education. God called her to serve Him in South Africa in 2003 and two weeks later she was on an airplane to Johannesburg. The harmful affect of AIDS is rampant and many young adults have never had the opportunity to understand the idea of sexual purity. As she has witnessed firsthand the devastating affects of AIDS God has stirred a passion for the teenagers in South Africa. Ashley’s heart is to work with orphaned babies and to encourage abstinence among the teenagers.
